4 Natural Beauty Products You Can Make at Home

There's nothing quite like making the most of being stuck at home right now to do a spring clean of your beauty and bath products. This could very well be on your to-do list, but because life can get so busy, it's taken you a while to getting around to doing it.

Whether you’ve been making the most of natural home products for a while now or not, the reality is that our homes can be full of toxic chemicals that we invite in. From our hair products to cleaners and even beauty and skincare products, there's a lot out there on the market these days that isn't very good for your health. With this in mind, let's make the most of the lockdown by looking at four natural bath products that you can make at home.

  1. Shampoo

You might not realize this, but your scalp is actually one of the more absorbent areas of your body. This means that if you use generic brand shampoos, there is a good chance that you’re exposing your scalp to toxic chemicals that, over time, can build up in your hair. The great news is that there are a lot of natural alternatives you can consider, and you can even make some yourself at home.

The best part of a natural shampoo is that it can help restore the oil balance in your hair, which is often stripped away by shampoos laced with bad chemicals. To create a natural shampoo that you can use to restore the health of your hair, make the most of essential oils. Mix a cup of Castile liquid soap with seven drops of essential oils. If you have an itchy scalp, try mixing in lavender essential oil. If you want to lighten your hair naturally, try lemon oil. If you are trying to grow your hair longer, mix soap with peppermint. Lastly, if your hair is a bit dull and could do with some shine, try rosemary.

  1. Toothpaste

The trouble with toothpaste these days is that it's full of harmful chemicals – sometimes even bleach. It's no secret that everyone wants white, bright teeth – but at what cost? It's much better to take care of our teeth and gums while making sure that they aren't absorbing any harmful chemicals.

If you want to try and make your own toothpaste, sans chemicals, then you’ll need to have baking soda and hydrogen peroxide handy. The baking soda is antibacterial, and mildly abrasive, while the hydrogen peroxide is great for breaking down any nasty bacteria that might be lurking. Mix two cups of baking soda with a third of a cup of hydrogen peroxide, and throw some essential oils in there depending on your taste. Of course, the go-to option is peppermint, but you can also consider options like tea tree oil.

  1. Make-Up Remover

While there may be makeup remover products on the mainstream market that claim to have the best ingredients, the truth is that they most likely include some unwanted chemicals, including artificial oils and even alcohol. While they might be efficient at getting rid of your makeup, they might not be doing the same favor for your skin.

If you’re trying to get on the straight and narrow with natural products, why not make your own makeup remover at home? Try mixing two tablespoons of coconut oil and two tablespoons of vitamin E oil, with two tablespoons of witch-hazel – just make sure that it’s the alcohol-free type. Lastly, mix all of these ingredients together with half a cup of water. You can either store it in a spray bottle or a container – just make sure that it’s air-tight.

  1. Deodorant

Deodorant is often one of the first things that people think of when they consider going natural. There has been a lot of press in the last couple of decades on deodorant and how a lot of the time, it can include harmful chemicals like aluminum and parabens.

This means that now is the perfect time to experiment at home and see if you can't come up with a DIY deodorant that beats the store-bought stuff. This is another DIY natural bath product recipe that makes the most of essential oils. For your made-at-home deodorant, try mixing two tablespoons of baking soda with two tablespoons of corn starch. Corn starch is known for being an excellent absorbent. Then, you can either choose between adding a few drops of tea tree or lemon essential oil. Both of these essential oils include antibacterial properties.
