Mānuka, Mamaku and Red Seaweed: The New Zealand Natives Behind Our Bioactive Illuminating Serum

Posted by Sarah Bacon on

There is a version of "natural skincare" that means importing the same handful of trend ingredients everyone else is using and calling it botanical. That was never the plan at Velettà. We are a New Zealand company, and some of the most interesting actives in skincare science happen to grow, wash up, or push through the soil right here — so that is where we started looking.

Three of them ended up in our Bioactive Illuminating Serum: Mānuka essential oil, Mamaku, and New Zealand Red Seaweed. Here is what each one actually does, and why we chose them over more familiar imports.

Mānuka: more than a honey ingredient

Most people know Mānuka from the honey jar, but the essential oil pressed from the same Leptospermum scoparium shrub has its own long history. Māori and early New Zealand settlers used it for centuries to care for skin under stress — irritation, blemishes, the aftermath of a wound. Modern research backs up a lot of that traditional use: Mānuka oil carries beta-triketones, compounds studied for their antibacterial and antifungal activity, alongside antioxidant constituents that help defend skin cells against free radical damage. There is even early animal research suggesting topical Mānuka oil may help protect skin against UV-related photoageing, though human clinical data is still catching up with the folklore.

For us, the practical benefit is a calming, balancing note that suits reactive or maturing skin — the kind that no longer tolerates the harsher actives it once shrugged off.

Mamaku: the native fern in disguise

Mamaku, the black tree fern, is one of New Zealand's most distinctive native plants — you'll recognise its dark, arching fronds in bush walks the length of the country. It reaches your skin via OceanDerMX®, a complex we use rather than a raw extract on its own, which is worth being upfront about: Mamaku is one of the New Zealand native ingredients that gives this complex its character, not a standalone ingredient we add in isolation. Within that complex, it contributes to the serum's illuminating, tone-evening effect.

New Zealand Red Seaweed: from the coastline, not a lab

The same OceanDerMX® complex draws on New Zealand Red Seaweed, harvested along our coastline. Seaweed extracts have earned their place in skincare for good reason — they are rich in minerals and polysaccharides that support hydration and help the skin barrier hold on to moisture. Paired with Mamaku, it rounds out a complex built entirely from ingredients native to the place we call home, rather than sourced from wherever happened to be convenient.

Why "local" isn't just a marketing angle

We could have built this serum around imported peptides or lab-grown actives with flashier names. We chose otherwise for a simple reason: ingredients that evolved in New Zealand's climate and coastline have a track record here that we trust, and sourcing them close to home means shorter supply chains and better traceability — something that matters more, not less, as skincare shoppers get better at asking what's actually in the bottle.

If you want to see how Mānuka, Mamaku and Red Seaweed come together, the Bioactive Illuminating Serum is where they meet.
