Moisture in skincare

Do I need a hydrator or a moisturiser?

Hydrating skincare products and moisturising skincare products serve distinct yet complementary purposes in maintaining skin health and appearance. Understanding the difference between the two is essential for creating an effective skincare routine tailored to individual needs.

Hydrating skincare products primarily focus on increasing the water content of the skin. They often contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and aloe vera, which attract moisture from the environment or deeper layers of the skin, helping to hydrate and plump the skin cells. These products typically have lightweight, watery textures, making them suitable for all skin types, including oily and combination skin. Velettà Bioactive Illuminating Treatment is an example of a hydrating skincare product. It is filled with humectants like Xlylityglucoside, Anhydroxylitol, Xylitol which boosts skin moisture levels, enhances the performance of humectants like glycerin, and provides long term moisture.

On the other hand, moisturising skincare products aim to prevent water loss from the skin and create a protective barrier to lock in moisture. They usually contain emollients such as oils, shea butter, and ceramides, which soften the skin and improve its texture by filling in gaps between skin cells. Moisturisers often have thicker, creamier consistencies, providing a more occlusive layer on the skin surface. They are particularly beneficial for dry and mature skin types, as they help to replenish lipid levels and restore the skin's natural barrier function.

While hydrating products focus on increasing water content and moisturising products aim to retain it, both are essential for maintaining optimal skin hydration and health. Dehydrated skin lacks water, leading to dullness, tightness, and fine lines, while dry skin lacks oil, resulting in flakiness, roughness, and sensitivity. Using hydrating and moisturising products together can address both concerns, ensuring that the skin remains hydrated, nourished, and balanced.

Incorporating hydrating serums, and essences into a skincare routine can provide an immediate boost of hydration, delivering essential moisture deep into the skin layers. These products are often applied after cleansing and before moisturising to maximise their effectiveness. Hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid have the ability to hold up to 1000 times their weight in water, making them highly effective at increasing skin hydration levels.

Moisturisers, on the other hand, are applied as the final step in a skincare routine to seal in moisture and prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL). They create a protective barrier on the skin surface, keeping it soft, smooth, and supple throughout the day or night. Choosing a moisturiser with the right balance of emollients, humectants, and occlusives is crucial for addressing specific skin concerns and achieving optimal hydration levels.

The Velettà range contains a host of moisturising skincare products including Nourish Moisturiser and Youthful Glow Intensive Hydrating Treatment which not only lock in moisture but hydrate the skin with ingredients such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid. Our lauded Rejuvenating Oil is a purebred moisturising product which softens skin and retains moisture.
