how to avoid wrinkles

What are wrinkles and why do we get them?

Posted by Sarah Bacon on

Wrinkles and fine lines are natural signs of aging that appear on the skin over time. They are caused by a combination of factors, including genetics, lifestyle, and environmental exposures. Everyone gets wrinkles and they are a sign of a life well lived (and skin that has lived) but most of us want to avoid having more than our fair share.

The skin is the largest organ of the body and serves as a protective barrier against external factors such as sunlight, pollution, and toxins. Over time, the skin undergoes natural changes, including a decrease in the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential proteins that provide structural support and elasticity to the skin. As collagen and elastin levels decline, the skin becomes thinner, drier, and less resilient, leading to the formation of wrinkles and fine lines.

Additionally, repeated facial expressions and movements, such as smiling, squinting, and furrowing the brow, can contribute to the development of wrinkles and fine lines. These repetitive motions cause the skin to crease and fold over time, resulting in the formation of lines, particularly in areas of the face that are most prone to movement, such as around the eyes, mouth, and forehead.

Furthermore, external factors such as exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, smoking, pollution, and poor dietary habits can accelerate the aging process and exacerbate the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. UV radiation, in particular, damages the skin's collagen and elastin fibers, leading to premature aging and the development of wrinkles, sunspots, and other signs of photodamage.

While wrinkles and fine lines are a natural part of the aging process (and there is nothing wrong with them!), there are several steps that can be taken to help prevent their formation and minimize their appearance. Firstly, adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate hydration, and sufficient sleep can help support overall skin health and vitality.

Additionally, practicing sun protection by wearing sunscreen daily, seeking shade, and wearing protective clothing and accessories can help shield the skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation and prevent premature aging. Avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol consumption can also help preserve the skin's elasticity and prevent the formation of wrinkles and fine lines.

Incorporating good natural a skincare routine that includes the morning, evening and weekly Velettà rituals will help enormously. To get the best out of mature skin you need to exfoliate frequently (but not too often) using our weekly Purifying Mask (filled with Vitamin C) or our 3 times a week Youthful Glow AHA Radiance Treatment. You also need to give skin the moisturise it needs. We suggest our Nourishing Moisturiser in the morning and our Youthful Glow Intensive Hydrating Treatment at night. And why not move it up a notch with our Bioactive Illuminating Serum with its cutting edge, natural actives (including natural retinoids) and our Revitalise Eye Cream which is filled with antioxidants, and exciting scientifically proven actives to improve skin texture, firmness, and resilience, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines over time.

Wrinkles and fine lines are natural signs of aging that result from a combination of factors including genetics, lifestyle, and environmental exposures. While they cannot be completely avoided, adopting healthy habits, practicing sun protection, and using skincare products formulated to target signs of aging can help minimise their appearance and help you achieve the best skin of your life.
