5 Reasons to Wear Sunscreen Every Day

Posted by Phil Houghton on

It doesn’t feel like that long ago that big beauty brands were encouraging us to use sunbeds and slather ourselves with baby oil at the beach in order to develop a  tan. However, as more knowledge and more research has done into the effect of UV rays on our skin over the past few decades, more concern has grown around our skin being in the sun.

Whether you have sensitive, fair skin, or darker skin that seems to just tan, we all get affected by UV rays in one way or another. If we only spend a minimum amount of time in the sun every day, the effects might be so gradual that we don’t even notice them until later in life. However, one thing’s for sure – UV rays can cause long-lasting damage to our skin. The new MO in the beauty world is to wear sunscreen every day, even if it’s cloudy. Let’s take a look at five reasons to wear sunscreen on your face every day.

  1. Keeps Your Skin Complexion Even

You might not realise that wearing sunscreen every day is actually going to make a big difference to your skin tone and complexion. If you want to achieve an even look and avoid subtle blotches, then it’s best to keep rubbing that sunscreen in every day.

This is because sun damage can cause your skin to develop uneven tone over time. The more you apply that sunscreen, the more even your skin will stay.

  1. Your Skin Stays Healthier

While keeping in mind that there are many sunscreens out there that aren’t natural enough to be used every day on your skin, the alternatives that are free from chemicals and harmful parabens can actually help keep your skin healthy.

This is because wearing sunscreen protects and preserves essential proteins found naturally in the skin, like keratin. Proteins like this get damaged by the sun, but when they're taken care of, they can keep your skin looking healthy and smooth and functioning as it should.

  1. It Will Reduce Your Risk of Cancer

Of course, with what we now know about the sun and our skin, there is a risk there that we can develop skin cancer from spending too much time in the sun. In New Zealand, where we don't have an ozone layer, we have an exceptionally high rate of skin cancer.

Luckily, sunscreen is an effective way to reduce the risk of developing many different skin cancer types, particularly melanoma. Melanoma is a particularly pervasive and aggressive form of skin cancer that can be life-threatening in a lot of circumstances. If you want ongoing protection from risks like this, you’ve got to wear sunscreen on your face every day.

  1. Help Protect Against Aging

Who doesn't want to preserve their skin and make sure it's looking youthful and glowing for as long as possible? Spending too much time in the sun can increase our chances of developing wrinkles and fine lines. However, if we're applying sunscreen every day, this process is prolonged, giving us supple, youthful-looking skin for a lot longer.

  1. Sun Protection

This may seem obvious, but of course, sunscreen is your only bet at protecting your skin from the sun's damaging UV rays. Sunscreen blocks those pesky UV rays, and can also help protect your skin from a variety of different skin issues.

This is because even getting a mild sunburn can have an ongoing, detrimental effect on your skin. This is why it’s so important to keep it safe from external factors like UV rays.

Using Skin Protection on Our Face Every Day

Here at Velettá, we believe that your skin is only as good as what you put into it. Taking care of our skin is an ongoing, daily process that involves important rituals, like making sure that it’s protected from the sun every time we go outside.
